Akeley Wood School
Assisted Places at the Senior School for 2007/08
Assisted places are available throughout the Senior School in the form of both scholarships and bursaries. Applications are invited from current pupils as well as those applying to join the school from elsewhere.
Scholarships are awarded in recognition of a particular area of excellence. In order to protect their currency, they are reserved for only a small number of beneficiaries.
Bursaries are subject to a means-test, and are only available to assist families with children already in the school whose financial position has recently changed in a significant way.
There are two types of Scholarship available in each year group: Major Scholarships and Minor Scholarships.
- A Major Scholarship is valued at a 20% reduction on basic tuition fees (excluding extras).
- A Minor Scholarship is valued at 10% reduction on basic tuition fees (excluding extras).
Initial and renewal applications for Scholarships must be submitted on or before the first day of the Spring Term in the academic year before the scholarship is to take effect; i.e., submissions for September are due by the start of the Spring Term in the preceding January.
The School will convene a Scholarship Panel which will consider applications during February half-term and promulgate decisions immediately after the February half-term break.
The Panel decision may be appealed, in writing, to the Headmaster within 10 working days of announcement of the Scholarship Panel decision. The Head will convene a Scholarship Appeals Committee who will consider appeals based on procedural challenge only. The decision of the Scholarship Appeals Committee will be final.
The offer of a Scholarship is:
- non-negotiable,
- valid for 30 days, and
- not transferable.
If in any given year it is deemed that the minimum standard for awarding a Scholarship has not been reached, any or all of the Scholarships in that year may remain dormant.
Application forms for both scholarships and bursaries may be requested from the school office or else downloaded from the school website (under the heading 'Downloads').
* Please note that awards made in the last year of the Lower School are not automatically carried forward into the Senior School.
