SCHOLARSHIPS AT AKELEY WOOD SENIOR SCHOOL
Each year Akeley Wood Senior School awards Scholarships and Exhibitions in Academia, Art, Music, and Sport. Scholarships are awarded in recognition of true excellence and accordingly, in order to protect their currency, they are reserved for only a limited number of beneficiaries. Applicants applying for Scholarships will automatically be considered for both Scholarships and Exhibitions.
The maximum Scholarship award constitutes a 25% reduction on School fees (excluding extras).
The maximum Exhibition award is £500.
There are two timetables to be observed for the submission of applications for Scholarships/Exhibitions:
(i) Candidates applying for Years 12 & 13 (Sixth Form)

(ii) Candidates applying for Years 7 - 11

Application Process

- Complete and submit the Form to the Headmaster’s PA, Mrs Alison Scoot.
The School does not accept open references. However applicants may, wish to supply other additional evidence or documentation in support of their application.
All applicants applying for a Scholarship/Exhibition must be registered to attend, or already be attending, the School prior to the submission of an application. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to attend an interview/audition before their application is put forward for final consideration by the Scholarship Awards Panel.
In the case of applications for a Sports Scholarship, candidates must be playing at County Level or above in order to be considered by the Awards Panel if the Sport is a mainstream Sport played at the School. If the chosen Sport is not currently a mainstream Sport at the School, candidates must be performing at National Level to be considered.
In the case of a Music Scholarship, candidates are expected at the very minimum to be performing at the following levels to be considered:
- A level candidates - Grade 6 and above
- GCSE candidates - Grade 5 and above
- KS3 candidates - Grade 4 and above
Covering letters accompanying all Music Scholarship applications should provide the following information:
- Which ensemble(s) the candidate plays for
- Who the candidate plays with on a regular basis
- Where the candidate plays, if a soloist player
- Candidates must clearly state whether they will be requiring an accompanist should they be shortlisted to attend an audition.
Shortlisted candidates who are invited to attend an audition, will be required to perform two contrasting pieces of their own choice and to sight read at a grade lower than the expected level.
The award of a Scholarship/Exhibition is non-negotiable, valid for acceptance for 30 days and non-transferable. If, in any given year, it is deemed that the minimum standards of excellence for awarding a Scholarship has not been attained by any applicant, any or all of the Scholarships/Exhibitions available in that year may remain dormant.
All Awards are made for a maximum of two academic years, but are renewable on application thereafter. However it is the responsibility of the recipient to submit an application for renewal, and to observe all submission deadlines as appropriate. No award will be renewed automatically.
Once awarded, Scholarships/Exhibitions are conditional upon the recipient continuing to contribute fully to school life l and maintaining high standards of performance.. The School reserves the right to withdraw a Scholarship/Exhibitions during its currency, if a pupil fails to maintain the standard of excellence which justified the initial award, or for any other significant reason, such as, for example, a major disciplinary offence being committed by the pupil.
Bursaries/Assisted Places
Bursaries are subject to a means assessment, and are only available to assist families with children already in the School whose financial position has recently changed in a significant way.
Parents wishing to apply for a Bursary must provide all necessary financial information, supported, where requested, by documentary evidence.
The award of a Bursary will normally apply for one academic year from its commencement, but will be subject to regular review during its currency, and parents of pupils to whom a Bursary is granted must inform the School immediately if their circumstances are subject to further change.
All applications for Bursaries are treated in the strictest of confidence.
Application forms for both Scholarships and Bursaries may be requested from the School office or downloaded from the School website.
