Special Educational Needs
We aim to help each individual to fulfil his or her academic potential. This is achieved through skilled, dedicated and enthusiastic teaching in small classes and by differentiating the expectation and work for each child. A small number of pupils with minor difficulties work happily in mainstream classes and receive extra tuition known as Study Support.
The Tutorial Program caters for those pupils with specific learning needs. Each year group in the senior school includes a tutorial class, where pupils are taught in smaller classes (maximum of 10 pupils). Here, pupils work under the guidance of specialist teachers and assistants. This allows them to build up their skills and confidence in a relaxed but challenging environment, whilst still being completely integrated within the school for all other subjects and curricular activities.
As Elizabeth Howett, who has been taught in the Tutorial program explains:
“I joined Akeley in Year 5, struggling with English. Since then, through hard work and the continued help and support of the dedicated staff at Akeley, I have improved vastly. In Year 9, I was predicted mostly Cs and a few Bs. In the end I managed to obtain 100% A*–C with grade A* in Maths. This allowed me to do the A levels of my choosing. I would never have been able to achieve these grades if it weren’t for the dedicated team of teachers and support staff at Akeley Wood.”
