Sport & Competition

At Akeley Wood Junior School sport is a key area of school life, where inclusive participation is nurtured and encouraged.

Starting with our nursery children PE and games are timetabled into the school week with sessions led by our dedicated sports staff, ensuring that all our children enjoy the benefits of physical education regardless of ability. Sports sessions focus on teamwork, communication and developing skills in a variety of different sports including rugby, hockey, netball, football, tennis, cricket and athletics.

Major sports are all offered, and all children from Reception to Year 6 will take weekly swimming lessons in the nearby Wolverton Pool for two terms each year. We wholeheartedly encourage and support those students who are members of local sports clubs and follow their passions in their many varied activities outside of school.

Exceptional coaching.

Our long-standing Director of Sport, Michael Lemon, and the Head of Girls’ Games, Rhiannon Chapman, have 24 years of service in sport at the Junior School between them, and lead a highly professional Sports Team ensuring that there is a place for all children, regardless of the level they participate at. This means that every student from Year 3 through to Year 6 will have the opportunity to wear the Akeley colours and represent the school competitively. The cross-over between girls and boys sport is also carefully considered.

Sports Facilities

Our wide-reaching grounds with many grass rugby/football pitches, cricket nets, an all-weather AstroTurf and large Sports Hall mean that sport continues whatever the weather. Our annual Sports Days are a fantastic occasion for our supportive parent community to see their children in action.

Our Sixth Form Sports Leaders frequently come down to the Junior School to support the Sports Team at events and festivals, to referee and lead teams of the younger children.

Scholarships

At Akeley we take great pride in showing the continuous development throughout all year groups and in turn seeing pupils flourish and reach their full potential once they reach Year 6.

We offer Sports Scholarships to children who show exceptional talent in their sport in Year 6, to take them through to the Senior School.

Competition

On a competitive level, Akeley Junior School is a strong contender.

Long-standing links with local schools means there is a full fixture list in our own and neighbouring counties. Membership of the ISA gives opportunities to compete at a regional and national level, and to host events that see schools come to our setting from far and wide to compete. We have great success this year at the ISA National Athletics Finals. Almost 150 pupils take part in after school sports clubs weekly, and these include activities such as yoga, handball, basketball and badminton as well as the major sports.

We offer Sports Scholarships to children who show exceptional talent in their sport in Year 6, to take them through to the Senior School.

Local Sporting Clubs

Our links with local clubs and primary schools continue to strengthen, enabling students to experience sport outside the school gates and at club level. We have relationships with Buckingham Rugby and Hockey Clubs, Whittlebury Golf Club, Stony Stratford Cricket Club, Wolverton Swimming, The MK Netters and Tennis Works from Milton Keynes. This year we have been able to invite local schools to Akeley to experience fixtures in netball, football and cricket.

We offer trips to events such as Wimbledon and the MK Dons Stadium for our students. In Half Terms, sport continues as the PE Team deliver different coaching courses alongside SuperCamps .
We wholeheartedly encourage and support those students who are members of local sports clubs and follow their passions in their many varied activities outside of school.
