End of Spring Term Year 6

Spring Term News

How lovely it has been to drive in each morning and see the lambs in the adjoining fields – a sure sign spring must be here.  It has been a busy term and the children are now ready for some rest and relaxation before we see them back here for the Summer Term, their last at primary school.

Each class has hosted a class assembly. 6W told us all about the Girl Guiding movement – topical news as Akeley’s unit opens in May.  6C looked at women, both past and present, who have made their mark on the world.  Finally, with their assembly falling on 17th March, 6B focused on a St Patrick’s Day theme.  The assemblies also gave a number of pupils a chance to share their talents with us with both dance and also musical performances aplenty.

In the classroom the children have been working hard.  In Maths we have been trying to develop the children’s understanding by encouraging them to apply their knowledge to practical problems through Maths Missions.  Topic work has been based around Geography and children have had fun making models of volcanoes and cooking dishes from other countries as part of their homework. Many of them also researched a famous explorer in order to write their biography – one of the genres we have covered in English writing lessons.  We have also enjoyed a Speaking Competition in which all the children took part.

A pleasing number of our Y6 children have been a source of help around the school undertaking some key responsibilities.  We had a new group of House Captains, Class Librarians and School Councillors who quickly settled into their roles.  We have also continued with Playground Leaders and Reading Buddies – and have had some very positive feedback about these pupils from other staff as well as the KS1 children.

On the sporting front we have enjoyed some great successes which can be read about in the Sports section of the newsletter.

Next term we have a lot to look forward to – the Y6 Production, a Viking visitor and Sports Day to name but a few.  The children will also have some special events to mark the end of their time at Wicken.

So, it just remains for us to wish you all a Happy Easter.  We look forward to seeing you next term,

Mr S Coughlan, Mrs L Bird & Mrs J Webb
