End of Term News- Year 5
What a busy term we have had in Year 5! At the beginning of term, the children settled quickly into the routines of their new year group and adjusted well to travelling between Tudor House and the main building for lessons.
In Topic, we have been studying a new unit about the local town, Buckingham. This involved a trip to the town at the end of September, during which we were able to study Geography, History and R.E. The children toured the Old Gaol, completed questionnaires in the town centre and created maps of the shops and businesses. We also had a tour of St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church, which included an opportunity to explore the bell tower. The children were complimented by members of the public on their impeccable manners and behaviour; we were very proud of them. Upon our return to school, we used the data and notes from the trip in class to produce a project about Buckingham. The children then used the skills that they have developed to research their own local area and produce a project about where they live.
In Science, we studied Changing Materials before half term, which provided an opportunity for lots of experiments. We were very impressed with the concoctions that were created; with some children making some quite unique new materials! Since half term, we have been studying Earth and Space, which has really captured the imagination of the children. They have produced some impressive posters for homework and enjoyed making sundials. We were able to calculate our ages on Mercury, with most children discovering that they would be around forty; they were amused to find that staff ages were well into the hundreds! At the end of the unit we were privileged to have Mr Novakovic come into school for the afternoon to give the children a fascinating talk on astronomy.
All three classes worked hard to produce fantastic assemblies. The first was by 5P who spoke about their marvelous adventures over the summer, following this was the turn of 5H, whose assembly was all about the trip to Buckingham and 5D entertained us with many musical performances and taught us how Christmas is celebrated by different countries around the world.
There have been many successful Hockey and Rugby fixtures over the term. We are all very proud of the Rugby A team who, after a fantastic victory at the Qualifiers, have secured a place in the National Finals in March.
It has been a lovely end to the term, with the children rehearsing for their Christmas concert in earnest. The corridor in Year 5 has often been filled with the voices of the children practising their songs. They were excited to entertain you all and we were very proud of how beautifully they performed. It certainly set the tone for a very festive last week of term.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support. We wish you and your families a restful and happy time over the Christmas holidays.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
