Gold Medal Coaching
Gold Medal Coaching comes to Akeley
On Wednesday 15th November, Akeley Wood School welcomed International hockey player, Crista Cullen in for a day of ‘All Things Hockey.’ Crista Cullen is widely recognized as one of the best hockey defenders in the world. She won gold for Team GB at the Rio 2016 Olympics and Bronze at London 2012. Crista has over 185 Great Britain and England combined caps, Commonwealth, World Cup and European Cup bronze medals and was awarded Great Britain’s Hockey Player of the Year (2006). She was Great Britain’s top goal scorer in the Beijing Olympics, and joint top goal scorer at the London Games.
Born in Lincolnshire, Crista spent her early life growing up in Kenya, where her family still live, before moving to Leicestershire at the age of 12 to attend Oakham School, in Rutland. Crista spoke a lot in her inspirational talk, to all girls chosen to participate in the day, about her work that she continues to do in Kenya in the conservation of wildlife habitats. She talked about how her PE teacher inspired her to be the individual she is today and supported her greatly through all her training and practices whilst in Kenya. She spoke passionately about team spirit and having the confidence to take risks in life, as well as on the hockey pitch.
All students who took part in the day were coached through a one-hour masterclass session with Crista, who challenged them to take risks and have a go with a positive ‘I will try’ attitude. Something in which we hope all students took away from the day. Congratulations to Lotte Taylor, Connie Bennett (Year 5/6), Libby Jones, Sophie Miller (Year 7/8), Sofia Way, Anaya Kundi (Year 9/10) and Caitlin Jones and Izzy Byron (Year 11/6th) who all received medals presented by Crista on the day, for their excellent effort and positive ‘can do’ attitude throughout their session.
