Hitchhiker’s guide to the Science Department

A hitchhiker was welcomed into the Science department today, when year 9 pupils discovered a water snail on some pond weed we had bought to use in an experiment. Pupils looked at the snail under the microscope and we all agreed that he/she was really very cute! We were also interested to see that, with the use of a transverse microscope, we were able to see the snail’s organs; the stomach can be seen in one of the photographs.

Fact of the day: Thinking about a snail’s digestion system – did you know that a snail’s anus is on top of its head? The digestive tract undergoes torsion during the larval stage, resulting in this unusual arrangement!
