Podium places at the English Alpine Championships

Kayne Stanway of 7AOG is back in school this Monday following his latest training and racing block. He spent the week before half term training with his academy team, prior to travelling to Bormio, Italy to compete in the English Alpine Championships which took place in half term week. The English Alpine Championships are one of the biggest race events of the season for all British racers, with over 400 racers in age groups ranging from the under 10s, through to seniors. In Kayne’s U12 boys’ category alone there were around 40 racers competing in a very strong group.
The U12s had two races during the course of the championships, a Giant Slalom and a Combi which is a mix of slalom and GS turns, along with a jump and a couple of banked turns. In the Giant Slalom he skied two good runs, achieving the third fastest time on each run. With the final result depending on the best time in total across the runs, Kayne finished on the podium in third place. The Combi was a tricky course with many of the strongest skiers, including Kayne, skiing out on their first run. On the second attempt Kayne had a solid run which was good enough to take fourth and another place on the podium as, at these championships, for the U12 and U10 the podium extends to fifth position.

Returning for this half term, a break in the training programme until just before Easter means that Kayne will not have to face the to-and-fro of last half term.
