School Athletics Championship

Thursday 30th June saw 50 Junior School pupils represent Akeley in the Annual Prep School Athletics Championships held at Stantonbury.
This is the 4th year of the event and Akeley have had a great record as we have won it twice and were Runners Up two years ago. Going in to the event as last years Winners the squad preformed as they always do. The effort and commitment was outstanding but the competition was tough. With Berkhamstead and Wellingborough running away with points in the longer distance races Akeley needed more points. Then came an explosion of points in all the Hurdles and sprint races which put pressure on the other schools. In the field events Akeley were gaining a few more points but it all came down to the Relays.
We had found out we were in second place and I have to say the relay teams didn’t disappoint. We won 3, second in 2 and 3rd in another. Was it enough?
There were to many fine displays by our pupils to name them all but it had been inspiring to watch the pupils perform. They had really pushed themselves and not one gave up.
So then came the results – Wellingborough 3rd. We had a chance. Then the announcement the Berkhamstead had won by 14 points.
Second it was, but we had given anyone a run for their money. I was so pleased for our team and it had been a real team effort all afternoon. Pupils and Parents cheering on others in the squad. What a great way to finish Athletics this term.
Well done to everyone. Thanks Parents. Your support was outstanding.
