Our strong academic tradition is equalled by our unwavering emphasis on music, sport and the creative and performing arts, together providing a broad and balanced curriculum for every child.
Music is a core curriculum subject and encompasses singing, specific instrument tuition, theory and composition, with enhanced learning opportunities and masterclasses from visiting professional musicians.
With fully equipped music rooms, dedicated practice rooms and recording studios, the music department has plentiful space for the School’s many choirs, orchestras and bands to prepare for their performances at the much-loved Woodfest and other annual festivals, competitions and events.
Throughout the school, drama is prized as a means by which all students can find the tools for greater self-expression and confidence. Our annual productions create opportunities not only to take to the stage, but behind the scenes in assisting with costume and scenery, or lighting and sound.
Those excelling in acting may opt to take peripatetic drama lessons leading to LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts) qualifications.
Nowhere is the creative spirit enfolding Akeley Wood more apparent than in the breathtaking artistic creations and outstanding GCSE and A-level exhibits from Senior students, who are encouraged to experiment with art, textiles, design and technology and photography to discover their passions and reflect their unique view of the world.
Regular visits to galleries serve to fuel students’ imaginations further.
Our fun and inclusive PE classes, taught in our enviable multi-use sporting facilities, are mixed ability and cover a wide variety of activities, from traditional sports such as rugby, football, hockey and netball, to archery, badminton and even strength and conditioning for older students.
Teams in multiple sports compete in regular matches at local, county and national level, and sports-loving students can take PE at GCSE and A-level.
