Having been in the planning for 18 months, it was time for Akeley’s budding sportsmen and women to take on a week-long immersion of sporting fixtures, in the heat of Dubai. As well as an amazing sporting experience, students enjoyed plenty of quality downtime as the trip also encompassed some amazing new cultural experiences.
This bi-annual sports tour is always such an incredible experience for students, creating memories that will be talked about for the rest of their lives. As with all trips, parents and staff were able to follow the adventure on our trips Twitter feed @akeley_trips.
Students hit the ground running on the morning of arrival, getting straight into a training session. This kickstarted the teams ready for the first games against Box Hill School the next day.
The boys were very privileged to be able to play on the first team pitch of the Dubai sevens stadium, a venue that has hosted some of the best 7’s rugby in the world, a real wow factor!
Boundaries were pushed for some students and staff as they tested their nerve at Wild Wadi Water Park. Exhilarating and quite hair-raising at times! Great fun and a very enjoyable experience. Later that evening saw a good win over The Dubai Hurricanes for the 1XV rugby boys, back at the Dubai Sevens Stadium. The girls won their Hockey Tournament, coming away with the silverware and also enjoyed some competitive netball in their tournament, finishing a respectable 6th place overall. . All sports on the tour were very competitive and teams were well matched for all players, football, rugby, netball and hockey.
The tour had an amazing buzz as days were packed with activities, getting a real flavour of Dubai. Excursions included, the Burj Khalifa andhe Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. Cycling the F1 track in Abu Dhabi was a real highlight. We also visited the Dubai Mall, went on a 4×4 safari and enjoyed a cultural evening in the desert. All this alongside playing sport in some incredible venues.
In summary it was an absolutely fantastic experience for our students who, not surprisingly in true Akeley fashion, demonstrated impeccable behaviour throughout the trip. Thank you to all, parents, staff and students involved, before, during and after the trip.
Now on with the planning for Dubai 2020!
