U13 v Bedford Modern

On Friday, 3rd March Akeley travelled to Bedford Modern School to participate in their annual sevens tournament and were drawn in a pool with NSB, QE Barnet and heavy weights, Whitgift from London. Whitgift put us to the sword with a first half blitz and were comfortable winners with six tries to nil; Akeley seemed to still be on the bus. The second game against QE Barnet saw us burst into life, with Iestyn Porter’s footwork and Oliver O’Connell’s show, to go on and salvage a draw against an athletic side. In our final group game, we came up against Northampton School for Boys and dispatched them five tries to two, the final score, with the last play of the game being the pick of them. Thomas Cramb broke through and offloaded to Jamie Angus, who returned the favour. Cramb then offloaded to Porter, who steeped his way through several would-be tacklers and passed to Angus on the wrap around, who then barrelled over in the corner, right in front of Lewis Terry on GoPro duty. This only just beat Dougie Oliver’s outrageous chip and chase for Porter.

We progressed to the knockout stages of the shield in a group with Aylesbury Grammar School and Lincroft School. A great pop from James Annesley to Jamie Angus kept us in touch at two tries to one down at half time against AGS. The fleet footed Porter grabbed another and Tomas Hitchens came up with a timely interception to take us ahead by three tries to two, to win the match. This set up our final match knowing a win would see us bring home some silverware. We huffed and puffed but never quite blew the house down against Lincroft and were lucky to be in the game at half time. The second half saw us get back to our ways, an early try from Hitchens again settled the nerves. We played our trump card late on as the coolest man on the pitch, Oliver O’Connell, dummied his way over from five metres out to crash over.

A fantastic start to the sevens season for the Under 13s; and with Stowe next week, and then Rosslyn Park later on, let’s see where we end up.
