U15 & 16 A V Wellingborough
On Tuesday 8th of October Akeley travelled to Wellingborough school. We arrived a few men short of a full 15 but thankfully we were given a spare Wellingborough centre to make up the numbers. We started the game strongly with an early break from Todd Wilmer who unfortunately knocked on in the act of scoring. A strong break by Tom Sandiford through the middle saw him score under the posts to be converted by Alex Gomersall. Wellingborough bounced back and quickly scored a converted try of their own. Some strong counter rucking from Daniel Oliver saw Akeley turn the ball over and quick hands allowed Michael Somefun to outpace the defence. After some strong tackles from Wellingborough Alex Gomersall chipped into space and a good follow up tackle from Angus Gray forced Wellingborough into touch. At half time Akeley were ahead 19-10. We started the second half as we had finished the first with Sandiford again busting through the middle with a hard line from 10.
Wellingborough made some changes to their team and scored two tries which brought the game back into the balance at 26-24 in favour of Akeley. A well planned kick off saw us put them under pressure again, resulting in the turnover. Great footwork from Alex Gomersall saw him get on the score sheet, the conversion of his own try saw us begin to pull away at 33-24. Tom Sandiford scooped up some scrappy ball to canter in for his hat trick, no conversion left the score at 38-24. Wellingborough again bounced back with two further scores but crucially missed one of their conversions. Stern words from stand in skipper Sam Bateman saw Akeley lift the intensity and allow Sandiford to ghost through and dive under the posts. Final score of 43-36. A very pleasing result, against one of the stronger teams on our fixture calendar.
