Year 5 Spring News

Romans, Science Week, World Book Day, Sports & More

It has been another busy term in Year 5. After the Christmas holiday the children quickly settled back into their routines and started working hard.

Year 5 had the honor of looking after the library for two weeks after half term; the children loved having the responsibility of tidying away books and labelling new ones. To promote the use of the library, the children decided to spend every break time during the second week, reading their favourite childhood stories to Key Stage 1 children. This invitation was very well received and it was a pleasure to see clusters of children gathering around to enjoy the stories. One child from Year 1 enjoyed listening to ‘The Dinosaur That Pooped a Planet’ so much that he laughed all the way down to play on the infant field afterwards!

In Topic, we have been studying the Romans. Part of this study involved a Roman company who came to visit for the whole day. The children got to experience and handle Roman artifacts and a few lucky children were chosen to be dressed as Roman queen, slave and soldier. The professional stayed in character all day and in the afternoon created a battle as if it were back in Roman times. The children were split into teams and rotated being Celtic warriors with spears (made from foam) and Roman soldiers with shields in specific formations. They had a fantastic day.

In Science, we have studied forces and life processes. To celebrate British Science week, the children created posters to represent change. We have been very impressed at the high standard produced by the children and their unique interpretations of the design brief. During the last week of term we celebrated British Science Week by creating changes with funny – and messy – experiments in our Science lessons. We were also very fortunate to have an explosive Science demonstration outside on the terrace from Dr Mitchell, a teacher from the Senior School.

All three classes have worked hard again to produce fantastic assemblies. The first was by 5P who spoke about being positive, following this was the turn of 5H, whose assembly was all about World Book Day and 5D who taught us all about the charity Comic Relief.

There have been many successful Netball and Football fixtures over the term. We are all very proud of the Rugby A team who, after a fantastic victory at the Qualifiers, went on to secure fifth place out of fifteen at the National Finals in March. The team won 3 out of their 4 matches and were a credit to the school.

Our singers and musicians have also made us very proud in the various competitions and concerts that have taken place this term. The singing at the 70th Anniversary Concert was commended by all who were there and the success at the MK Festival was fantastic. Well done to all who took part.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support. We wish you and your families a restful and happy time over the Easter holidays.

Happy Easter!
