Reception

The first big step on their academic journey.

Reception is a key year in a child’s education, which is why we combine first-class teaching with a high level of care and support to ease your child into the exciting world of learning. Our Reception setting is self-contained and slightly apart from the hubbub of the main Junior School, giving our younger children an exciting indoor and outdoor area to call home during their first year at school.

In the September after children turn 4, many children will progress from our Nursery into our Reception Class and will be joined by those that are new to Akeley Wood.

Our curriculum continues to follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and work towards the Early Years Goals, as we introduce a more structured school day.

Reception offers a supportive and fun bridge between Nursery and the more formal educational experience enjoyed from Year 1.

Developing the whole child.

We like to have a close relationship with children and their families to ensure we get the very best from our students and ensure their learning journey is one of wonder and fun, with plenty of encouragement and support.

One of the huge benefits of Reception at Akeley is that children will be taught by specialist teachers in dedicated learning spaces around the school every week including PE, Music, French and Forest School. Students will already be familiar with these teachers if they have come up from our Nursery. A delicious and heathy lunch with plenty of options is eaten in our wood-panelled dining room with children from Years 1 and 2. Our children are also lucky enough to do swimming lessons for one whole term during their time in Reception.

Outdoor Learning

Forest school.

Our reception students benefit from access to our incredible Forest School facilities once a week, where they'll get to learn through play and work on their team building skills. Children will have the chance to build dens, play in the mud kitchen, visit our resident animals, sit around the storytelling chair and visit the miniature fairy kingdom!

Trips and visits.

The Reception Year at Akeley is packed full of exciting extras to get our children really thinking about the world they live in and their local community.

From trips out to places such as the Cotswold Wildlife Park, The Royal and Derngate Theatre in Northampton and our local church, to visits to school from the Police and Ambulance Services, we want to inspire and intrigue them from an early age.

Join us for an Open Event
