Sport has always played a big part in the day-to-day at Akeley Wood. We have a vision of participation, performance and engagement that we hope to bring to life for each student. We aim to inspire, support and nurture students to fulfil their best in whatever activities they choose, be it academic, sporting or extra-curricular opportunities.
We aim to make sure all students can enjoy sports and feel the benefits of physical activity at whatever level they become involved, with several hour hours of outdoor physical education, which includes PE lessons, games and Outdoor Learning timetabled into each week. We work hard to make sure we meet the needs of individuals in these sessions. Whether a student is aiming to hone their skills at county or national level, or simply playing for enjoyment, camaraderie and the associated health benefits, everyone is welcome and valued.
A competitive spirit.
In competition, we have a busy and varied fixture list across the year in the local district schools league, attending and hosting ISA sports events and we perform strongly in National Schools’ Competitions. We have had recent successes at a national level with our teams in cricket, triathlon and athletics, and one of our students is currently representing Scottish Hockey at U18 level.
Our team of Sports Staff is led by our Director of Sport, Mr Neil Busby, bringing with him over 20 years of teaching Physical Education and Sport within leading state and independent schools. Mr Busby and his committed team deliver a broad and varied range of sports and activities, and Sixth Form Sports Leaders support with team management and umpiring at home matches and festivals.
AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS
A sports club to appeal to everyone.
After-school sports clubs are available most days for those students wishing to take their game to the next level, with a focus on gameplay, skills and tactical advancement in mainstream sports as well as other gameplay such as basketball, volleyball and girls’ football. We support students competing in sports such as equestrian, triathlon and swimming both in and outside of school, celebrating their successes whenever we can, including in school newsletters, assemblies and at our annual Sports Awards ceremony.
Historically our links with local sports clubs are strong, such as Northampton Saints, Stony Stratford and Bucks Cricket. Our students benefit from their coaching and player pathways, and they often use the excellent facilities we have at school.
