Akeley Wood Senior School supports pupils aged 11 to 16 through the important years from Year 7 to Year 11. Based at Akeley Wood House near Buckingham, our Senior School gives pupils academic challenge, pastoral support and opportunities to become more independent.
These are years of growth. Pupils deepen their knowledge, prepare for GCSEs, build friendships, take on responsibility and begin to understand the kind of learners and people they are becoming.
ACADEMIC LEARNING
Learning through the Senior School years
Senior School learning is designed to help pupils build knowledge, curiosity and independence. Pupils study a broad curriculum that gives them a strong academic base before they make choices for GCSE.
As pupils move through their senior years, they develop the skills and subject understanding that will support later study. They are encouraged to ask questions, explain their thinking, work with others and take pride in improving over time.
Learning should feel purposeful as well as challenging. We want pupils to understand what they are learning, why it matters and how effort, reflection and regular practice help them make progress.
The senior curriculum gives pupils room to develop across core GCSE subjects and a wider range of topics. This breadth helps them understand their strengths before they begin making more focused decisions about GCSE study and future pathways.
GCSE PREPARATION
GCSE preparation and academic support
GCSE preparation begins before pupils reach Year 10. The Junior Years help pupils build secure foundations, learn how to manage their work and begin to understand the subjects that interest them most.
When pupils turn 11 years old, they move into more focused GCSE study. They develop greater independence, learn how to revise and receive guidance as they work towards exams and future choices.
Academic support is part of that journey. Teachers help pupils understand their strengths, respond to feedback and keep building confidence when work becomes more demanding.
Preparation also means helping pupils understand how to organise themselves. They learn to plan, prioritise, ask for help and reflect on progress, so GCSE study feels like a stage they have been building towards.
PASTORAL CARE
Pastoral care through the Senior School
The Senior School brings academic growth, social change and greater independence, so pupils need adults who know them well. At Akeley Wood, pastoral care gives pupils regular support, clear routines and trusted people to speak to.
Pupils are supported through daily school life, wellbeing conversations, assemblies and opportunities to reflect on progress. Senior School and AW6 pupils also have wellbeing check-ins, reflection journals, student ambassadors, access to a school counsellor and resources through The Wellbeing Hub.
This support helps pupils talk about challenges before they become too large. It also helps them understand how confidence, responsibility and resilience are built through ordinary choices each day.
Pastoral care is closely linked to learning. When pupils feel able to talk, ask questions and reflect honestly, they are better placed to take on academic challenge and make good choices.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Independence, responsibility and confidence
Senior School pupils are encouraged to become more independent without being left to work things out alone. They learn to manage time, organise work, make choices and understand the effect their decisions have on themselves and others.
Akeley Wood values Kindness, Respect, Charity and Community, supported by Learner Habits of Aspiration, Resilience, Responsibility, Integrity and Courage. These foundations help pupils understand effort, relationships and responsibility as part of daily school life.
THE NEXT STAGE
Preparing for the next stage
Our Senior School years help pupils prepare for life beyond Year 11. Pupils build academic knowledge, independence and confidence while beginning to think more carefully about GCSE choices, A Level pathways and the future beyond school.
AW6, our dedicated Sixth Form, gives students the next step in the Akeley Wood journey. Senior pupils can look ahead to a setting designed to support greater independence, academic focus and preparation for university and future careers.
By the end of Year 11, we want pupils to have grown academically, socially and personally. They should understand how they learn, what motivates them and how to take responsibility for the next stage.
Progression is about the next qualification and the person behind it. Pupils should leave Year 11 with stronger skills, clearer self-knowledge and the confidence to step into a more independent phase of education.
