🏎️ From Pit Stops to Podiums – Our Year 6 Take on Red Bull STEM X Race Day!
What a high-octane day for our Year 6 students, who immersed themselves in the world of Formula 1 with the Red Bull STEM X Race Day Experience! From building and racing their own cars to mastering the Pit Stop Challenge designed by Red Bull engineers, our pupils explored the thrilling intersection of innovation, teamwork and engineering.
They trained like real F1 drivers, tested their reaction times using professional technology, and stepped into the spotlight with post-race media interviews. There was even time to design custom car liveries and helmets, and learn about the many exciting careers that exist behind the scenes in motorsport.
These hands-on challenges are a perfect reflection of the inspiring, curiosity-driven learning we champion at Akeley Wood Junior School – where pupils are encouraged to think creatively, work collaboratively and embrace every opportunity.

Akeley student Lewis Turkington officially made the leap into circuit racing, announcing his debut in the BRSCC Fiesta Junior Championship last month – and we couldn’t be more proud! 🚗💨
After two successful seasons in UK Autograss, Lewis is taking on a new challenge in his striking green and white #72 Tool Maniac Mk7 Fiesta, backed by sponsors Tool Maniac, The Green Group and more!
Not only is this a major step in Lewis’s motorsport career, it’s also a powerful platform for his role as an ambassador for ‘Driving Dyslexia Forward’, inspiring young people to believe in themselves, take risks, and pursue their passions.
Lewis has grown up in the racing world, supporting his father’s professional career for over a decade. Now, he’s applying that knowledge to the circuit – racing with 20Ten Racing and sharing his journey to help others see that there’s more than one path to success.
🎓 Balancing speed with study, Lewis is also focused on sitting his GCSEs this summer, choosing to pause racing during key exams – a perfect example of the 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 we champion at Akeley.
Wishing Lewis every success as he lines up at Snetterton on July 19th and 20th – we’ll be cheering him on! 🏆

Within the past week, our Media and Film students experienced two exceptional opportunities to explore the creative industries from both professional and academic perspectives.
At Akeley, we welcomed Adam Teeuw, Vice Principal of Lucas Productions, who led a fascinating session on the filmmaking process – using a single Star Wars scene to illustrate the journey from script to screen. His insight into the many roles and collaborative efforts involved in modern filmmaking gave our students a valuable, behind-the-scenes look at a career in the creative sector.
On Tuesday, our Year 12 Media students visited Oxford Brookes University, where they explored the Media, Film, Communication and Culture facilities. They attended a series of academic lectures and engaged with the realities of university life. The experience offered an inspiring glimpse into the possibilities beyond Sixth Form, helping students reflect on their future pathways.
Our sincere thanks to Adam Teeuw and the team at Oxford Brookes for supporting our students’ development in such meaningful ways.

Last month, while many of us were enjoying chocolate eggs and family time, Year 7 student Gracie T was doing all that and competing in tennis tournaments!!
Gracie played at five venues across the country—Stony Stratford, Sutton, Cambridge, Carisbrooke and Kent—competing in nine tournaments and a remarkable 29 matches. She came away with:
🏆 Two tournament wins (12U Singles G3 and 14U Doubles G3)
🥈 Three runner-up titles (12U Singles G3, 16U Singles G4, 14U Doubles G3)
💪 21 matches won overall – and even managed to celebrate her 12th birthday and spend time with her grandparents in between!
Her dedication to her sport, commitment to training and graceful handling of both success and setbacks reflect Akeley’s learner habits of Resilience and Aspiration. We’re incredibly proud of how Gracie embodies our school values within the classroom, in her community and her competitions; showing strong aspiration and resilience in everything she does.
👏 Well done, Gracie – and good luck with the next round of tournaments this summer!

Building on their theatre visit to see a Shakespeare play earlier this year and follow-up English lessons exploring the text in depth, our Year 10 and 11 students took their Shakespeare study to the next level last week with immersive drama workshops that brought the Bard’s words to life.
From bold performances to character-deepening exercises, students stepped into Shakespeare’s world—exploring language, tension and motivation in ways that fuel both creative thinking and critical understanding.
This dynamic experience not only supported their GCSE preparation, but also helped students grow in confidence, collaboration and curiosity—showing just how exciting Shakespeare can be when it moves beyond the page and onto the stage.
At Akeley, we’re passionate about making learning meaningful, memorable and just a little bit magical.
